How much does a golf trip cost? For three nights and four rounds at a value destination like Myrtle Beach, plan on about $1,100–$1,700 per golfer including flights. A premium US resort trip runs roughly $2,200–$4,200, and Scotland or Ireland $4,200–$8,800 or more. Green fees, lodging and flights make up most of it; caddies, tips and bag fees add the rest.
Those ranges are wide, and anyone who gives you a single “average golf trip cost” is guessing. A golf trip is a bundle of eight or ten separate purchases, and each one moves on its own: the season, how far you fly, whether the lodging comes with a minimum stay, whether you walk with a caddie or ride, and how seriously the group takes dinner. Two groups can go to the same resort in the same week and spend $1,000 a head apart.
So this guide does the arithmetic instead. It breaks a golf trip into line items, puts a dated 2026 price on each one, and then builds three complete trips from them: a value trip to Myrtle Beach, a premium resort trip to the Monterey Peninsula and a week in Scotland. It also covers when a golf vacation package saves money, when a tour operator earns its fee, and the costs that don’t appear in anyone’s “from” price. Every figure was checked in September 2026 and carries its source. Where we’ve had to assume something (flight prices, mostly), we say so.

Golf trip cost per person: the four tiers
Most golf trips fall into one of four tiers. The table gives a per-golfer range for each, built from the line items further down the page. The “before flights” column is the one to compare, because flights depend on where you live.

Value fly-in figures are our worked example below, using Myrtle Beach Golf’s May 2026 package data. Premium and international “before flights” ranges are JEL Golf Travel’s 2026 tiers; FairwayPal’s 2026 guide puts Scotland and Ireland lower, at $2,500–$4,000 all in, which in our experience of published 2026 green fees is optimistic for a trip that includes the famous courses. Drive-to figures are our estimate. Flights are assumptions from a Midwest or East Coast hub and move a lot with season and route.
Two things stand out. First, the jump from value to premium isn’t the golf, it’s the lodging. A premium resort round costs two or three times a Myrtle Beach round, but a premium resort room can cost five times a Myrtle Beach condo share, and it often comes with a minimum stay. Second, international trips cost more because they’re longer, not because each day is dramatically pricier. A week in Scotland with seven rounds is roughly two Pebble Beach weekends stitched together, with a transatlantic flight added.

What goes into a golf trip budget? Every line item
Here is every cost that turns up on a typical golf trip, with a 2026 range for each. Use it as a checklist when you compare a package price with booking it yourself, because “from” prices rarely include more than the first two or three rows.

Three rows on that table catch people out more than the others:
- The lodging minimum. At resort-only courses, the room is the real price of the round. A $695 Pebble Beach green fee, booked more than a couple of days ahead, comes with at least two nights at about $800 or more a night.
- Caddies and tips together. A $100 caddie fee plus a $60 tip is $160 a round. Over four rounds at a walking resort, that’s $640 per golfer, more than the flight for most people.

How much does a round of golf cost?
On a golf trip in 2026, expect roughly $40–$150 for a public or municipal round, $150–$375 at most resort courses and $495–$775 at the famous public-access courses such as Erin Hills, Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass. Shadow Creek in Las Vegas tops the list at $1,250. Carts, caddies and tips are often extra.
Green fees have become more complicated in the last few years. Plenty of resorts now use dynamic pricing, where the price depends on demand for that exact tee time. Harbour Town on Hilton Head has dropped its rack rate entirely; The Golf News Net’s 2026 samples ranged from $378 on a July day to $651 in early September. Others publish clear seasonal rates, which are much easier to plan around. And many courses add residency pricing. Torrey Pines charges non-residents of San Diego $258–$322 for the South Course, plus a $50 advance booking fee, against far lower resident rates.

Two cheap tricks are worth knowing at almost any resort. Replay rates (a second round the same day) typically run at a big discount: Bandon charges 50%, Erin Hills $295 against $495. And twilight rates in the late afternoon are often dramatically cheaper than morning times, particularly in resort markets. Worked example 1: a value trip to Myrtle Beach for four
Myrtle Beach is the benchmark for value because its whole golf economy runs on packages. Myrtle Beach Golf’s May 2026 cost calculator puts the most common package, 3 nights and 4 rounds, at $450–$700 or more per golfer, with budget packages from about $300 and premium packages at $800–$1,200 or more.
Here’s a complete trip for four golfers flying from Chicago in the fall, using a mid-range package:

The package line is most of the difference between the low and high ends. A budget package using less famous courses, or a summer trip when rates drop, gets the total close to $1,000. Upgrading two of the four rounds to the area’s top courses, such as The Dunes Golf & Beach Club or Caledonia, pushes the package toward $800 and the total toward $1,800.
Two more things make Myrtle Beach cheaper than it looks on paper. Most of the East Coast can drive it, which deletes the flight and bag-fee lines entirely. Every destination has one or two costs that dominate its budget, and they’re rarely the same ones. At Myrtle Beach it’s the package. At Pebble Beach it’s the lodging minimum. At Bandon Dunes it’s the caddie, four times over. Currency converted at $1.35 per pound and $1.16 per euro (rates at January 1, 2026). Scotland and Ireland fees are 2026 high-season rates from the clubs or National Club Golfer’s 2026 table.
The pattern is worth noticing. At the cheapest destinations, golf is most of the bill. At the most expensive ones, it’s the smaller half. That’s why the most effective way to cut the cost of a bucket-list trip is usually to change where you sleep, not where you play.
When is the cheapest time to take a golf trip?
The cheapest time for a golf trip is the shoulder season just outside each destination’s peak: winter on the Oregon coast and in the Carolinas, summer and early fall in the desert and Florida, and April, May or October in Scotland and Ireland. Published rates can fall by half or more.
The published 2026 rates show how big the swings are:
- Bandon Dunes: $375 for resort guests from June to September, $340 in May and October, $175–$225 in February, March and November, and $130 in December and January.
- Cabot Citrus Farms: $350 from October 2 to December 13 and $330 in January to mid-April, but $185 from June 1 to October 1.
- TPC Sawgrass: from $775 between September and May, and from $550 between June and August.
- Erin Hills: $495 in peak summer and $395 in the shoulder weeks of May and October.
- Scottsdale: summer rates fall hard. Troon North has advertised 50% off tee times booked inside a 78-hour window.
The trade-off is always the weather, and it’s rarely as bad as the discount suggests. October at Bandon is often the best weather of the year at 90% of the summer price. Late April in Florida is warm and dry, with many courses 10–20% cheaper after Easter. Summer in Scottsdale is genuinely hot, but a 6 a.m. tee time finishes before the worst of it. The weeks to avoid are the ones where the price is high for reasons that have nothing to do with the golf: tournament weeks, school vacations and holiday weekends. Worked example 2: Monterey two ways, resort or value
The Monterey Peninsula is the best place to see how much the route matters, because you can do it at two very different prices and still play Pebble Beach.
The resort route is the one Pebble Beach is built around. Book a room at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay or Casa Palmero and you can reserve tee times well ahead, but you must stay at least two nights (three nights Thursday to Sunday from September to November), with rooms from about $800 a night. The green fee is $695 for Pebble and about $495 for Spyglass Hill.
The value route skips the resort. Stay in a Monterey hotel, play the peninsula’s cheaper courses, and try for Pebble as a non-guest in the final day or two before play, when unsold times are released.

For roughly the same money, the value route buys twice the golf and twice the nights. The catch is certainty. As a non-guest, you can’t lock in Pebble weeks ahead. If that one round is the whole point of the trip, the resort route is the only guaranteed way in. If the point is a great golf trip that probably includes Pebble, the value route wins. Worked example 3: a week in Scotland for four
A first golf trip to Scotland is the most expensive trip most American golfers ever take, and the one where published totals are hardest to find. Operators generally won’t print them. So here’s one built from 2026 green fees, with pounds converted at $1.35 (the rate at the start of 2026; check the current rate before you budget).
The itinerary is six nights in St Andrews and East Lothian with five rounds: the Old Course (via the ballot), Kingsbarns, Carnoustie’s Championship Course, North Berwick and the St Andrews New Course.

That’s consistent with the market’s own framing. Haversham, a Scotland and Ireland operator, describes the choice as “$6,000 versus $12,000” trips. Birdie Brae’s worked example of a mid-range five-day trip for four comes to £1,685 per player, including about £680 for flights from the US, or roughly $2,275. That’s much lower because it uses fewer marquee courses and a self-drive car. Its premium resort week is £3,893, or about $5,255 before the extras.
Three Scotland-specific notes:
- The Old Course isn’t guaranteed. The ballot decides most visitor times. Operators can package guaranteed Old Course times, at a premium.
- 2027 prices are already higher. Carnoustie’s Championship Course rises to £450 (about $610) in high season in 2027, and 2027 is an Open Championship year at St Andrews (July 11–18), which restricts availability.
- Single rooms cost more. Haversham reckons a single room adds about 50% to lodging. Pair up if you can.

Are golf packages worth it?
Golf packages are usually worth it at package-driven destinations like Myrtle Beach, and at resorts where a stay-and-play bundle is the only way to secure tee times, such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2. They’re not worth it when the bundled courses aren’t ones you’d choose, or when the lodging is far from the golf.
A golf package is simply lodging and golf sold together, sometimes with extras such as breakfast, range balls or airport transfers. The most common kind in the US is the stay-and-play, sold either by the resort itself or by a local booking service in a golf destination. It works for the seller because it fills rooms and tee times at the same time. It works for the buyer when the bundle is cheaper than the pieces, or when it’s the only way in.
Here’s a simple way to test a package:
- Price it à la carte. Look up the rack rate for each course and a comparable room for the same dates. If the package isn’t at least 10–15% cheaper, you’re paying for convenience.
- Check what’s included. Carts, range balls, taxes and resort fees vary. So do the rules on rain checks and replays.
- Check the course list. A cheap package built on the courses nobody wants to play is not a bargain.
- Read the cancellation terms. Packages often carry stricter deposits than tee times booked directly.
All-inclusive resorts are the extreme version, and they’re a special case. At some, green fees are included; at others, only the room and the food are, and every round is extra. Is a golf tour operator worth the money?
For a first trip to Scotland or Ireland, a group of 12 or more, or an itinerary built on ballot and restricted-access courses, usually yes: operators can guarantee tee times months ahead that individual visitors can’t. For most US trips, no. A resort’s own package normally costs less for the same golf.
The case for an operator is access and risk. Operators can often book three to six months out with guaranteed pricing, while online self-booking at some courses opens only about a month ahead. They also carry the risk when something breaks: a cancelled tee time, a sick driver or a lost bag. That’s worth a lot in a country where you’re driving on the left and don’t know who to call.
The case against is the markup, which operators rarely publish. Golfbreaks’ US-facing Scotland packages give a sense of the range in September 2026: from $1,045 per person for four nights and three rounds at Royal Dornoch, from $2,045 for four nights and three rounds at St Andrews, and $6,235 for a seven-night, five-round “Open links” tour. Most operators also want at least two golfers per booking, which rules out many solo travelers.
A middle path works well. Book the anchor round and lodging yourself, and let an operator or local service handle the parts where local knowledge matters, such as drivers and ballot-proof tee times. What are the hidden costs of a golf trip?
The costs that rarely appear in “from” prices are lodging minimums at resort-only courses, caddie fees and tips, cart and resort fees, golf-bag fees of $45–$55 each way, taxes and service charges of up to 18% abroad, single-room supplements of around 50%, and a rental van big enough for four golf bags.
A few of those deserve more detail, because they’re where budgets actually break.
- Caddies at walking resorts. At Bandon Dunes, every course is walking only and a caddie costs $100 per bag plus a tip. Our guide to how much to tip a caddie has resort-by-resort norms, but $40–$60 is typical and $100 or more is normal at the marquee courses.
- Taxes on posted rates. Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic adds 18% tax to its green fees ($400 for Teeth of the Dog for hotel guests becomes $472). Sand Valley notes that its posted rates don’t include tax.
- Overweight bags. Going over 50 pounds typically triggers an overweight fee of $100 or more each way on US airlines, which can make shipping the clubs cheaper.
- The van. Four golf travel bags and four suitcases don’t fit in a midsize SUV. Minivans cost more to rent and sell out first.
- Cancellations. Many resorts charge the full fee for no-shows, and some packages require non-refundable deposits months ahead.
How to cut the cost of a golf trip: 10 tactics that work
None of these involve playing worse golf. Most involve playing it in a slightly different week.
- Travel in the shoulder season. Bandon Dunes charges resort guests $340 in October against $375 in summer, and $130 in December. Florida courses commonly cut fees 10–20% after Easter.
- Use replay rates. Bandon takes 50% off a same-day replay; Erin Hills charges $295 against $495.
- Play twilight. Late-afternoon rates in resort markets are often far cheaper than morning times.
- Go to the desert in summer, early. Troon North in Scottsdale has advertised 50% off summer tee times booked inside a 78-hour window. Play at dawn and be done by 11.
- Build a value trip with one splurge round. Monterey with one Pebble round, or Myrtle Beach with one round at The Dunes Club, beats a full resort stay on cost.
- Fly the golf bag as your only checked bag, or on a card or status that includes free bags. Southwest, for example, gives cardholders one free bag.
- Share a house. For eight or more golfers, a rental house usually beats hotel rooms on both cost and fun.
- Avoid tournament weeks. Prices across Scottsdale in WM Phoenix Open week and around Augusta in Masters week make any other week look cheap.
- Go in eights. Two tee times, two vans and two rental houses split evenly. Odd numbers leave someone paying for an empty seat.

How to split the cost of a group golf trip
Money arguments ruin more golf trips than bad weather. A few rules keep it civil:
- Collect a non-refundable deposit up front, before anyone commits to anything non-refundable on the group’s behalf.
- Split shared costs evenly (the house, the van, the group dinner) and personal costs individually (flights, caddie tips, the pro shop).
- Use an expense app from day one. Splitwise, Tricount and Settle Up all track who paid what, and Venmo or Zelle settle it.
- Settle on the last night, not three weeks later.

Is it cheaper to book a golf package or book separately?
Usually cheaper to take the package at golf destinations like Myrtle Beach, where packages fill rooms and tee times together. At resort-only courses, the package is often the only way to book ahead. Always price the pieces separately first; if the package isn’t 10–15% cheaper, you’re paying for convenience.
How much should I tip a caddie on a golf trip?
$40–$60 per bag at a typical course with a caddie program, and $100–$150 or more at marquee resorts. Some resorts publish guidance: Whistling Straits recommends $70 on a $90 fee, and Erin Hills suggests $75 or more on a $65 fee. Tip in cash.
Do golf trip prices include carts?
Resort green fees in the US often include a cart, but not always. Pebble Beach charges a cart fee on top of the green fee, and Torrey Pines charges $48. Walking-only resorts such as Bandon Dunes have no carts at all, but caddies cost $100 or more per bag.
What is the most expensive part of a golf trip?
Usually lodging, especially at resort-only courses with minimum stays. At Pebble Beach, two nights at the resort cost more than the two rounds. On international trips, green fees and the flight are close behind.
The honest answer to how much a golf trip costs is “less than the brochure suggests if you plan it, and more than you think if you don’t.” Build it line by line, price the package against the pieces, and put the savings toward one great round. Florida is where the seasonal price swing is easiest to use. Cabot Citrus Farms charges resort guests $185 a round in summer against $350 in late fall, TPC Sawgrass drops from $775 to $550 between June and August, and many Florida courses cut rates 10–20% after Easter while the weather is still good. Scottsdale is the clearest example of what the calendar does to a golf budget. Peak season runs from mid-January to mid-March, when operator packages start around $965 per golfer and the top resort courses charge their highest rates. The Masters is the extreme case of a trip where the ticket is the cheapest part. Face value for 2027 is $125–$160 a day if you win Augusta National’s lottery, and concessions still include a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich, but Masters-week house rentals averaged $514 a night in 2025 against a normal $200. If lodging is the biggest line in a premium golf budget, the resort you choose is the biggest decision you’ll make. Some tie their best course to the room, as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst No. 2 do; others, like Bandon Dunes, sell resort guests cheaper golf in exchange for a stay. Mexico and the Caribbean are where the gap between the headline price and the real price is widest. Casa de Campo adds 18% tax to its green fees and requires caddies on Teeth of the Dog, and Moon Palace’s unlimited golf carries a $90 cart fee on every round. Ireland is the clearest example of how fast overseas golf costs have moved. In 2027, Lahinch, Ballybunion’s Old Course, Waterville and Tralee all charge €500 (about $580) a round, Royal County Down charges £495 (about $670), and caddies are required per group at Lahinch and Ballybunion. A seven-night trip with five or six rounds, flights, shared cars and good hotels typically lands between $5,000 and $9,000 per golfer. On a group trip, the per-person number is only half the question. The other half is how the shared bills get split: who pays the house deposit, whether private rooms cost more, and what happens when someone drops out two weeks before. Collecting a non-refundable deposit of 25–50% from every golfer before booking anything solves most of it. The cheapest good golf trip is often the one you drive to. A two-night stay-and-play weekend at a mid-range resort within a few hours of home typically costs about $500 to $1,000 per person, with no flights, no bag fees and no rental car.
